The Barrier Islands of Beaufort are a Great Way to Spend the Day Outside

Joseph Coupal - Tuesday, May 10, 2011

There are many things to do out and around Beaufort, South Carolina. This is a beautiful area with beautiful scenery and beautiful weather, so get outside. The barrier islands of northern Beaufort County are famous for their beautiful, unspoiled, white-sandy shorelines. Spend the day building castles or catching rays at The Sands in Port Royal or Hunting Island State Park, honored as one of the “Top 10 Beaches in America” by Trip Advisor in 2008.

One of the most beautiful beaches in Beaufort County is The Sands, a peninsula jutting into the Beaufort River. This is a perfect spot to spend a relaxing day on or by the water.

The Sands is a free, drive-on beach and boat ramp. The shoreline is plentiful with aquatic life. There is a boardwalk stretching along the marshy shore next to the beach and boat ramp. A protected reef along the walkway harbors an oyster colony, and an observation tower offers views of the islands between Port Royal and the ocean.

There are a lot of fishers here of its proximity to the Intracoastal Waterway and boaters looking to go fishing, shrimping, crabbing or just to enjoy a day out on the water won't be disappointed. In a county full of coastline, islands and waterways, The Sands is one of the few free beaches in northern Beaufort County. There also are not usually a lot of people. So get outside, enjoy the weather and the scenery and relax.

Sheldon Church Ruins in Beaufort

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, March 16, 2011
view of Sheldon Church

Many beautiful weddings are held at the old Sheldon Church

William Wordsworth drew inspiration from the ruins at Tintern Abbey in Britain. The Old Sheldon Church has this kind of impact when you see it in person—breathtaking, picturesque, and peaceful. The Church was built in the mid 18th century by William Bull whose  Newberry Plantation bordered the church grounds.

During the Revolutionary War, Sheldon Church was set on fire and rebuilt in the remaining walls in 1826. Thirty-nine years later, Sherman’s troops burned the church for a second time, and it was never repaired again.

After Sherman’s army left, the people in the surrounding towns gutted the inside of the church to rebuild their own homes.

Visit these beautiful ruins and see a piece of Beaufort history.

Visit South Carolina’s Information Highway to find directions to the Old Sheldon Church.

Make Some Memories at the Highway 21 Drive In

Joseph Coupal - Thursday, March 10, 2011

Feeling nostalgic at the Highway 21 Drive in!

Next time you go to the movies, try something different and go to the drive-in. Drive-is make me feel nostalgic for the 50s (even though I was born much later!) because they were so popular back then. They are fun and romantic at the same time because you get your own private viewing booth—your car! At the Highway 21 Drive-in Movie Theater, located at 55 Parker Dr in Beaufort, they really want to keep the memories alive and hope that everyone feels a little nostalgic now and then. You can call 843-846-4500 (movie line) or 846-4021 after 6pm for general information.

Tonight, you can see Rango, True Grit, Just Go With It, and Big Momma’s House: Like Father, Like Son. I have to admit, I really want to see Rango. Highway 21 Drive In is open Friday through Sunday. This Friday will start a whole new movie schedule so store the number in you cell phone and be on the lookout!

Celebrate Beaufort’s 300th Birthday

Joseph Coupal - Wednesday, March 09, 2011

Founded in 1711, Beaufort is celebrating its 300th birthday this year! You can celebrate all year long by learning more about Beaufort with the Historic Beaufort Foundation. Beaufort has some of the most well-preserved houses in the country. Verdier House, located at 801 Bay Street, is one of those special houses in Beaufort that symbolize the wealth that could be acquired in 1800s Beaufort.

Verdier House, a Federal-style mansion built around 1804, was built and owned by John Mark Verdier. Verdier was a planter and a merchant. After he was sent to debtor’s prison, the house was left to his son and daughter-in-law, Caroling. The house was taken over by the Union army after Verdier’s son died and was taken back again by Caroline at a tax sale. Years later, the people of Beaufort rallied together to save the house from destruction, and now it is a house museum. Those valiant people formed what is now the Historic Beaufort Foundation.

Take a tour of the Verdier House! Tours are held everyday except Sunday, on the half hour from 10:00 AM until 4:30 PM

SouthurnRose Buggy Tour

Joseph Coupal - Friday, March 04, 2011

Beaufort has a lot to offer and plenty of sights to see. Have you ever taken a tour of your own city? If you haven’t or you think that sounds silly, you would be surprised at how much fun it is, and how much there is to learn about Beaufort.

Let the SouthurnRose Buggy tour teach you a little something about beaufort

Take a SouthurnRose Buggy tour through Beaufort and you’ll see beautiful houses, The Castle, an antebellum mansion, as well as where hit movies were filmed, like Forrest Gump and G.I Jane. The horses that pull the carriages are friendly and playful, and the owners take good care of them. You can see some pictures of the horses on the Southurn Rose website.

You’ll really feel like you’ve been taken back in time. Hearing the clip-clop of the horses hooves and the seeing the old Victorian style architecture is perfect for a romantic afternoon, or just to relax and learn a little more about Beaufort.

Call 843-524-2900 or email southurnrose@hotmail.com to make reservations. Ask about their wedding carriages!
