Beaufort has some of the most well-preserved houses in the country. Verdier House, located at 801 Bay Street, is one of those special houses in Beaufort that symbolize the wealth that could be acquired in 1800s Beaufort.
Verdier House, a Federal-style mansion built around 1804, was built and owned by John Mark Verdier. Verdier was a planter and a merchant. After he was sent to debtor’s prison, the house was left to his son and daughter-in-law, Caroling. The house was taken over by the Union army after Verdier’s son died and was taken back again by Caroline at a tax sale. Years later, the people of Beaufort rallied together to save the house from destruction, and now it is a house museum. Those valiant people formed what is now the Historic Beaufort Foundation.
