If you live in an apartment in Beaufort, SC you can join the fun at South Carolina's oldest continuing festival, the Annual Watermelon Festival. Events include the Youth Parade, Children's Day, Taste of Hampton, Pet Show, 5K run, Watermelon Eating Contest, Watermelon Judging Contest, Arts and Crafts, Street Dance, Parade that stretches from Varnville to Hampton and much more.
It's a Lowcountry tradition spanning several decades. This is the 72nd year of the Watermelon Festival. The week-long of festivities celebrates the local produce, friends, and family. The party also draws visitors to boost the local economy. This festival is full of days of parties and melon eating contests.
"Of the watermelons we have, we'll be giving away slices all day. They're all locally grown by local farmers," Chairman Jimmie Polk says.
"It's like Hampton's homecoming as well as biggest party," State Representative Bill Bowers explains. "It reveals the culture in what Hampton County is about, and it is all good things."
"It brings a lot of visitors. There are people that enjoy this festival every year.
The week will continue with parades, street dancing, and a mud run through June 22.
